Sunday afternoon in Lagos, and I was out with my mum and older brother. We were at an intersection, about turning into the main street, when the driver of the car on the opposite side of the road made an illegal turn just to get to where he was going quicker (as a sharp guy). Surprisingly, my brother had something to say (an insult) about it. I say surprisingly because he’s an expert in Lagos driving (meaning: no rules, get to your destination anyhow you want) and he’d have done the same thing if he was in the other driver’s seat. Then it occurred to me that a lot of things that we complain about are things that we are also guilty of.
You’re in traffic and you see someone driving in the same direction as you, but on the oncoming lane just to avoid the traffic.
You’re in a queue that looks like it’s going nowhere fast and you see someone that you barely even know, but they can get you ahead so you detach yourself from the line (ain’t nobody got time for that) and attach to your friend savior.
Getting off the road, I came across someone’s social media page who had “racist to white people” as part of their bio.
You think your own is different. But is it really?
