To say that I love music will be an understatement, or maybe inaccurate. Sure, I’m happy to have music playing as a background to my existence, but I am not technically knowledgeable about any kind of music, there are genres of music I haven’t even explored yet and I don’t spend my time collecting music…I seem to prefer just happening across them. However, there is something about some sounds I hear that makes me pause. All my nerve endings seem to be at attention, my being drawn inwards in focus, heart vibrating as I listen and I find myself exhaling at the end of it.
In those moments, I’m very present, but at the same time, I seem to be floating, suspended in the moment. I enjoy those feelings and I have a playlist of songs that I turn to whenever I want to feel that way. Sometimes, in those moments, I visualize scenes and that’s what this post is about (finally got to it, lol).
When I first watched ‘The Get Down’, I knew I had to find the soundtrack, and one of my favorite songs off it is ‘This Ain’t No Fairytale’. Here’s the song and my idea for a visual:
The parallels between drowning** and the metamorphosis from caterpillar to butterfly.
There you are going about your life and all seems well. Hang on, was the water always reaching you this high up? Was this shell always there? Then it’s violent and you try to fight it. Before you know it, you’re overwhelmed by what you cannot control. You think it’s the end…you give in to the end, but it’s not over yet. Just when you hit bottom, right when you take what you think is your last breath, there’s a new propulsion…up, out, break free.
You survived and now you’re stronger for it. Welcome to the new you.
“We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation.”
– Romans 5:3-4 NLT
We were never promised a life to be lived out as a fairytale, but what we are told is to be of good cheer, for Christ has overcome the world. Life will do all sorts to us – appease us, tease us, shock us, uplift us, confuse us, cheer us, discourage us – it’s all a part of a journey and it is what we do in those moments that matter more. As always, it is easier said than done, but by His grace, we can achieve all things.
One of these days, I hope to make that visual a reality *adds to growing bucket list*
**feeling overwhelmed, not in the literal sense.
