Some people want to be Batman…

…and that’s okay…BUT some of us are more than happy to be Alfie – Alfred Pennyworth. Can that be okay too?

I’ve always been more fascinated by Alfred more than Batman; seemingly in the shadows, but we all know that Batman can’t function properly without him. The inspiration to finally get around to writing this post is the current frustrations I’m going through job-hunting. The last feedback I received on my resume was that it reads more as a ‘doer’, instead of an ‘achiever’. Okay…but do you not want someone that will and can get the job done? If there is one thing that I have learnt about myself so far, it is that I am an amazing sidekick. I might not be the one to always bring the ball to the table, but I can certainly run with it (especially when I believe in the mission).

I really hope that HR understands that not everyone can / wants to be Batman…even Batman wasn’t always Batman. I believe that the key things to look for are whether the person can do the job required, their growth potential and how they fit as a component to the big picture of the company. Yes, it will mean a slower process, but then it’s not about how fast, but how well ^_^

Besides, if everyone is claiming achiever on their CV / resume, why am I still encountering mind-blowing levels of incompetence in the workplace? Best to allow people present themselves in their truths so they can be free to discover and productively own their fit.

To all the fellow Alfie’s basking in the shadows of the bat signal: cheers, I see you.
