Words on a Tee: Self-care is a civic duty

I say this because when we are at our best, the way we interact with the world is different. If you don’t already know, self-care is good/important/necessary for you. It’s an ongoing practice that gets you, and keeps you, where you’re at peace with yourself; where your heart is open and you feel like you’re walking on sunshine. That place where you might (almost) not care if someone steps on your white shoes.

Your interactions with others are more generous. Just like you’re dealing with your own shit, you know that everyone is going through theirs. The same grace you give yourself is what you extend to others.

You don’t project on others. Not your fears, your insecurities, or your expectations. You understand how to process your feelings and communicate in a healthy way.

Drinking water and minding your business takes on new meaning when you practice self-care. You realize that the only life you need to be watching is yours. You respect that everyone has their own journey.

You respect others because you respect yourself. You know you’re worthy and so is everyone else. That’s not to say to accept bad behavior, but you’ll know that the (in)actions of others are more about them and less about you.

What that self-care looks like though is as unique and common as we are. Yes, we’re all flesh and blood, same and different. So you have to figure out what works for you, by yourself. Get to know yourself.

Self-care is all about you, but it’s not selfish. Hurt people really do hurt people and going by that, self-care is the most selfless thing you can do. If you want to save the world, start with saving yourself.
