What I’ve Been Reading: ‘Kids Are Worth It: Giving Your Child The Gift of Inner Discipline’ by Barbara Coloroso

This book was recommended to me as a helpful resource for parenting. After reading it, I found that it was not only useful for parenting, but it gave me a valuable perspective to review my upbringing. We tend to see things as black/white or good/bad, but the reality is more like a mix with blurred lines. I’m a big fan of understanding the ‘why’ of things because it helps you to make informed decisions going forward.

On parenting, I like that it was based on the premise of autonomy – allowing your child to make their own decisions within certain limits – and accountability – guiding your child to own up to and correct their mistakes in a respectful way. It’s easy enough to dictate what your child can/can’t do when they are little, but they will grow and the goal is to have them prepared for when they have to be independent, functioning members of the society.

I enjoyed reading the book and this post is my online equivalent of shouting from the rooftops. My favorite excerpts from the book, as well as my other thoughts, are in the images below.
